Chief Chiniki arson

Chief Chiniki arson investigation led to the arrest of four people.

Noelan Twoyoungmen, a 22-year old man from the Stoney First Nation, has been sentenced to two years in a federal penitentiary after he pleaded guilty to the Chief Chiniki arson that burned down the restaurant in 2012.

Cochrane RCMP were called to the Chief Chiniki Restaurant just before 1 a.m., on August 21, 2012 after receiving a report of a fire at the local landmark.

When police arrived, they were met by crews from the Nakoda Fire Department from Stoney First Nation as well as firefighters from Cochrane and Springbank.   Despite their efforts, the business could not be saved.

Cpl. Matt Pumphrey of the Cochrane RCMP says during their investigation, police and fire officials determined the blaze was deliberately set.  Damages to the restaurant and gas bar totalled over $1 million.

In November of 2012, charges were laid against Noelan Twoyoungmen and three youth who cannot be named.

On Wednesday, Twoyoungmen pleaded guilty to one count of arson.
